Creation of a fantasy-style booknook-Phase 2

Step 1-Construction form
Definition of the basic box (booknook body) with dimensions corresponding to a standard bookshelf.
Method: creating geometry with the Box command and dividing walls for adding details.
Dimensions: 18.4 cm in height, 9.8 cm in width, and 25 cm in depth.

Step 2-Facade form
Designing the Gothic arch as the main decorative element of the facade.
Method: drawing curves (Curve/Polyline) and extruding them (ExtrudeCrv).

Step 3-Interior detailing
Adding columns and decorative elements (torches, runes, shields).
Method: using Revolve for columns and ExtrudeCrv for imported 2D symbols.
Boolean operations are applied for openings and ornamental cutouts.

Step 4 – Background and depth
Creating the portal effect with the help of a background.
Method: generating a surface with Revolve and applying a starry sky texture.

With a regular rectangular background, the immersion effect is lost.
Solution: use a semi-circular background shape to achieve stronger immersion. As a result, adjust the box size and increase its depth by 5 cm.

Step 5 – Materialization

  • Option 1 — stone masonry for the walls and tile texture for the floor (UV-mapped)
  • Option 2 — use of LED lighting along the columns to enhance atmosphere

Step 6 – Application
The model can be produced either as manual assembly (cutting and painting).
Modularity allows the composition to be adapted with:

  • different backgrounds (castle, sky, galaxy)
  • different lighting (with/without).

Conclusion of second phase
The modeling results show that a semi-circular background creates a stronger illusion of depth and provides a more realistic immersive effect than a rectangular one. In addition, interchangeable backgrounds—such as a starry sky, a castle, or a forest—allow the atmosphere of the booknook to shift according to mood, making the model both versatile and customizable.

State of the Field-at the moment there are numerous prefabricated and custom-made booknooks, most commonly in the form of street scenes, small towns, and libraries, while fantasy-themed booknooks are less frequent

By studying available literature and online resources, one can conclude that although a large number of such examples exist, the amount of functional and aesthetic variation remains limited

Problems-selection of suitable materials, determination of appropriate dimensions, and creation of a convincing depth effect

Goal-to develop a 3D model of a booknook portal that combines:

-aesthetic value

-the sense of immersion through depth illusion

-the possibility of manual assembly

Hypothesis-if structural planning is combined with the addition of mirrored surfaces, background elements, and lighting, it is possible to achieve the effect of immersion into a fantasy world

Criteria:

-Size matches the standard bookshelf dimensions,

-Visually perceived as a portal into another world

-Fantasy atmosphere is instantly recognizable without explanation

-Printout capability and assemble as a modular structure

Methods: -Analysis of existing solutions (Pinterest, Etsy)

-3D modeling in Rhino

-Creation of modules (arch, portal, background)

-Variation testing: with and without lighting

-Prototyping: assembling details into printable sheets for manual cutting and assembly
