State of the Field

When examining available booknook examples on the market (Etsy, Amazon, and specialized stores), several key characteristics can be identified:

Rainbow Love Book Nook

Magic Alley Book Nook – DIY 3D Wooden Kit

Completed Forest Path Book Nook

  • Themes: the most common are street scenes, libraries, and city alleys.
  • Dimensions: most ready-made sets vary within 18-20 cm in height, 10-12 cm in width, and 20-25 cm in depth, corresponding to standard bookshelf sizes. These proportions were taken as a reference for the current model. The data were derived from the analysis of existing kits, such as:
    • Rainbow Love Book Nook (Book Nook Store) -18.4 × 9.8 × 24.7 cm
    • Magic Alley Book Nook (Etsy) -approx. 20 × 12 × 25 cm
    • Forest Path Book Nook (Etsy) -19 × 10 × 24 cm
  • Details that enhance immersion: mirrors (for the illusion of infinity), LED lighting (strips, mini-lamps), decorative elements (windows, columns, sculptures), and textured surfaces (brick, wood, stone).
  • Drawbacks: many models repeat similar motifs, and backgrounds are often executed as flat surfaces, which weakens the sense of depth.

By studying available literature and online resources, one can conclude that although a large number of such examples exist, the amount of functional and aesthetic variation remains limited

Problems-selection of suitable materials, determination of appropriate dimensions, and creation of a convincing depth effect

Goal-to develop a 3D model of a booknook portal that combines:

-aesthetic value

-the sense of immersion through depth illusion

-the possibility of manual assembly

Hypothesis-if structural planning is combined with the addition of mirrored surfaces, background elements, and lighting, it is possible to achieve the effect of immersion into a fantasy world

Criteria:

-Size matches the standard bookshelf dimensions,

-Visually perceived as a portal into another world

-Fantasy atmosphere is instantly recognizable without explanation

-Printout capability and assemble as a modular structure

Methods: -Analysis of existing solutions (Pinterest, Etsy)

-3D modeling in Rhino

-Creation of modules (arch, portal, background)

-Variation testing: with and without lighting

-Prototyping: assembling details into printable sheets for manual cutting and assembly
